Videos beating their channel, and small channels taking off
Last updated 13 Oct 2026
A 5K-follower channel with a 500K-view video is a stronger signal than any chart.
Course · Stage 2: Pick a niche with data · Lesson 5/24 · 9 min
Why it matters
When a small channel's video gets many times its normal views, the platform is pushing that content beyond the channel's existing audience.
Several different small channels breaking out on one topic in recent weeks means demand that big channels haven't covered.
Step by step
- Compute the multiplier: video views ÷ the channel's average views (or ÷ followers when there is no baseline).
- 3× or more is interesting; 10× is strong.
- Filter channels under 100K followers to be sure small channels can win.
- Only count videos from the last 30–60 days.
- Group the outliers and find what they share: format, angle, length, title style.
Common mistakes
- Concluding from one viral video (could be luck).
- Copying the winning video.
- Only looking at big channels.
Ready-made prompt (ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini)
Here are videos beating their channel in [topic] over the last 60 days: [titles, views, followers, multiplier]. Find 3 shared patterns (format, angle, title style, length). For each, suggest 2 DIFFERENT video ideas (no copying) for a new channel.
Exercise
Find 10 videos at 3× or more in your niche and note what they share.
Done when: At least 5 videos from 3 different channels and one written shared pattern.
