How will you earn? Decide first, film later
Last updated 13 Oct 2026
Ads, affiliate, your own products or a personal brand — each needs a different kind of video.
Course · Stage 1: Start right · Lesson 1/24 · 9 min
Why it matters
Many channels quit after three months not because the videos are bad, but because they picked the wrong way to earn: broad entertainment while trying to sell an expensive course, or short clips while waiting for long-form ad revenue.
Choosing the money source first tells you the right video length, the right audience and the right metric from video one.
Step by step
- Write down one main and one backup income source: ads (YouTube, Facebook), affiliate (TikTok Shop, Amazon), your own product or service, or a personal brand.
- YouTube ads need longer videos (8+ minutes allows more ad slots) and a market with good RPM — check the monetization requirements first.
- Affiliate needs short videos where the product appears in the first 3 seconds, with a clear call to tap the cart or link.
- Services and personal brands need videos that show real expertise — fewer, deeper.
- Write the main metric for each source: ads → watch time + RPM; affiliate → cart taps + orders; services → enquiries.
Common mistakes
- Chasing all four income sources at once, so every video is half-hearted.
- Measuring views when the goal is orders.
- Not checking the platform's monetization rules for your country.
Ready-made prompt (ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini)
I plan a channel about [topic] for [audience], with [hours] per week. Compare 4 ways to earn (ads, affiliate, my own product, personal brand) by: time to first income, best video format, metric to track, risk. Recommend one main and one backup. Do not invent numbers.
Exercise
Write 3 lines: main income source, backup source, the metric you will check every week.
Done when: Each income source is paired with exactly one video format and one measurable metric.
Check yourself
Get all 3 right to mark this lesson complete.
1. You make 30-second videos and want income soonest. Which fits best?
2. If affiliate is your income, what is the main metric?
3. Why check monetization rules first?
