Break a winning video into 5 parts
Last updated 13 Oct 2026
Hook, pacing, psychological trigger, visuals, call to action — learn the structure, not the words.
Course · Stage 3: Learn from winners without copying · Lesson 8/24 · 10 min
Why it matters
Watching a viral video and saying 'nice' teaches nothing. Taking it apart shows what keeps viewers watching.
The structure is reusable for other topics; the words, footage and music belong to the creator.
Step by step
- Hook: what is said or shown in the first 3 seconds? What is promised?
- Pacing: how many shots, how long each, where does the rhythm change?
- Trigger: curiosity, fear of missing out, surprise, empathy, a specific number?
- Visuals: close-ups vs wide, on-screen text, colours, a recurring character?
- Call to action: where, what, where does it send people?
- Rewrite the structure in your own words for a different topic.
Common mistakes
- Copying the script.
- Only analysing the hook.
- Studying a video that isn't an outlier.
Ready-made prompt (ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini)
Here is the transcript and shot list of [link] (currently [x]× its channel average): [paste]. Split it into 5 parts: hook, pacing, trigger, visuals, call to action. Then write an EMPTY template (none of the original wording) I can apply to [my topic].
Exercise
Break down one outlier video from your niche into 5 parts and write an empty template.
Done when: The template works for another topic and contains none of the original lines.
