Spotting Douyin trends before they reach TikTok

1. Why Douyin is a preview of TikTok

Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) has a huge creator base, fast production studios and its own algorithm. Formats such as tiny-world miniatures, satisfying restoration, AI talking animals and mascot product funnels often peaked there before spreading to TikTok and Reels. If you see a format rising on Douyin and it is still rare on TikTok in your market, you may have a window of a few weeks.

2. How to search without reading Chinese

Translate your topic into Simplified Chinese (machine translation is fine for keywords), search Douyin and Xiaohongshu, and translate the titles back. Douyin often hides view counts, so judge by likes, comments and shares instead, and treat any reach number as an estimate.

Look at the last 7–14 days only. A format that was big six months ago has usually already travelled.

3. Which trends can travel

Good candidates are visual and need little language: satisfying processes, before/after, miniatures, cooking, pets, product demos, AI animation formats.

Weak candidates depend on Chinese wordplay, local celebrities, local holidays or shopping habits that do not exist in your market.

Then check your target market: search the same idea on TikTok in your language. If you find many recent videos already, the window has closed; if you find few or only old ones, it may be open.

4. Adapt, don’t copy

Take the structure (hook, pacing, number of shots, payoff) and rebuild everything else: your own footage or AI scenes, your own script, local examples and music you have the rights to. Re-uploading or lightly editing someone else’s video breaks platform rules and gets channels demonetized.
